Habitat pursuing 60-unit project

Habitat for Humanity is hard at work on a new development on the flats south of the Assiniboine River that could help house around 60 families, the organization’s Manitoba CEO told Brandon City Council on Monday.

Jamie Hall told councillors that Brandon is “by far” the most generous municipality in the province, citing the 40 homes that Brandon has helped build so far.

Preliminary and design work is underway for the duplex and multi-family units that are scheduled for construction in the Assiniboine Gardens neighbourhood.

Currently, Habitat for Humanity in Brandon has the capacity to build approximately four homes per year and Hall said this development would allow the organization to do more.

Hall said Habitat for Humanity is currently waiting for a drainage study to be completed by the City of Brandon ahead of construction.

Brandon City Council approved the sale of city-owned lands north of the intersection of Stickney Avenue and 13th Street North to Habitat for Humanity for $1 at the July 18, 2022 regular meeting under the condition that the organization apply for development permits within three years.
