Selkirk Judo Club raises $59,000 for local chapter

Selkirk Judo Club once again held their annual fundraiser raising over $59,000 for the Habitat Manitoba Selkirk Chapter. Over the years, this dedicated group has consistently shown their support, contributing to the construction of safe and affordable homes for families in need within the community.

Last year’s fundraiser saw 48 members of the Judo Club actively participating, showcasing not only their athletic prowess, but also their commitment to giving back. With each throw and pin on the mat, they were making a significant impact on the lives of others.

“We are very pleased with the effort of all of our athletes and volunteers who assisted with this event and raised money for a very worthwhile cause,” says Brian Jones, owner of the Selkirk Judo Club.

The chapters we serve and the businesses and organizations they collaborate with in their communities highlight the collective effort and dedication to Habitat Manitoba. Chapters are made up of volunteers and staff outside of Winnipeg that represent and carry out the mission of Habitat for Humanity Manitoba across the province and in Kenora, Ontario. Since 1998, Chapters have built 81 homes.

Thank you to the ongoing support from the Selkirk Judo Club. If you are interested in learning more about our 12 chapters across Manitoba please visit here.

Rady Faculty of Health

We are so grateful that Rady Faculty of Health Sciences is partnering with Habitat Manitoba for their 5th Title Home Sponsorship. On April 2nd , our organizations got together to kick off our partnership at the “Key to Health” pop up social event which included games, food, music from DJ K Chdda and was hosted by CTV Winnipeg’s Colleen Bready.

We are grateful for the support and enthusiasm shown by everyone who was involved. The Rady Faculty of Health Sciences focuses on health and social well-being, and believes that social responsibility and accountability are core values for their students, faculty and staff.  They recognize that housing is a social determinant of health and that too many children and families cannot afford safe housing. Habitat believes that safe, decent and affordable housing is a “key to health” and leads to better outcomes including improved health, education success and self-esteem.

Donate to help Rady Faculty of Health Sciences build this summer.

Community Event – The Fuse at Park Theatre

A heartfelt thank you to The Fuse, Meridian OneCap Credit Corp., Park Theatre, 92 CITI FM’s Howard Mandshein and all the attendees for your support with the benefit concert on March 2, 2024. The event was a fantastic night filled with music, laughter, and community spirit, as all proceeds from the evening were generously donated to Habitat Manitoba.

The support and generosity shown by The Fuse and all those involved are truly commendable, and it is heartwarming to see the community come together to help working low-income Manitoban families. With each note played and each voice raised in song, we are one step closer to building safe and affordable homes for families in need. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event a resounding success!

Critical Repair Program – We need your help

We are now extending a helping hand to seniors with our Critical Repair Program. This important program is designed to improve the quality of life for low-income individuals in Winnipeg by addressing critical and time-sensitive damage in their homes. From resolving health and safety deficiencies to implementing accessibility modifications, we aim to ensure that families and seniors can continue to live comfortably in their homes with pride and dignity.

Each year, Habitat Manitoba receives requests from low-income homeowners facing urgent repair needs. Many of these individuals lack the necessary skills or financial resources to address these issues on their own, leading to concerns about the safety and stability of their homes.

With a significant investment of $450,000 from the Province of Manitoba last year, Habitat Manitoba piloted the program by starting with repair projects in the homes of low-income seniors in Winnipeg who have no other options.

This program will help ease strain on the social services and health care systems that would be impacted by displaced seniors if their homes aren’t repaired. Our ultimate goal is to expand the Critical Repair Program into a permanent offering, accessible to all eligible individuals in need of critical repairs. By securing additional funding and resources, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing housing challenges in our community. Join us in supporting this vital initiative by donating today and helping us build a stronger, more resilient community for all.

Meaning of Home

We are happy to report that the Meaning of Home writing contest experienced another record-breaking year for the number of entries from grades 4, 5 + 6 students across Manitoba. There were 2834 entries, surpassing last year’s 2710 entries! That means $28,340 was raised for us to use toward the build of a new home for a low-income, working Habitat partner family.

Although the contest is closed for 2024, the excitement is far from over. Stay tuned as we announce the runner-up and grand prize winners later this month! We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the students, teachers, and parents who contributed to this year’s success. Your enthusiasm and support are truly inspiring as we work together to build brighter futures for families in need.

It’s time for spring cleaning
It’s that time of year to declutter, donate, and start spring cleaning! Instead of tossing your unwanted household items, why not donate them to Habitat ReStore and make a positive impact on your community and the environment?

When you donate items to ReStore, you’re not only helping to support Habitat for Humanity Manitoba’s mission to build safe, decent homes for working, low-income families, but you’re also contributing to environmental sustainability. ReStore recycles perfectly reusable household items, giving them a second chance at life and reducing your environmental footprint.

As you embark on your spring cleaning journey, consider these tips: Start small by tackling one room at a time, set realistic goals, and involve the whole family for a fun and productive cleaning session. And don’t forget to gather up any gently used items you no longer need and donate them to ReStore, where they can find a new home and make a difference in someone’s life.

ReStore Donor Spotlight

Thank you, Bockstael Construction, for your generous donation to the Habitat ReStore and for helping us build community together!

We’re immensely grateful for their recent donation of 30 tubs and drywall, valued at over $25,000. Despite the logistical hurdles of retrieving these items from a third-story building window, Bockstael Construction showed unwavering dedication and creativity in ensuring their contribution reached us.

Their generosity will directly impact Habitat Manitoba’s mission of providing safe, decent homes for families in need. Bockstael Construction’s commitment to giving back is truly commendable, and we’re honored to have such wonderful partners in our efforts to create positive change.

Thank you for your invaluable support!
