Teklom and Azeb’s journey to homeownership has been shaped by courage, hope, and their desire to build a brighter future for their children. Originally from Eritrea, the couple and their three oldest children—Merhawit, Ahberet, and Zerisenay—came to Canada in December 2019. In Eritrea, the family lived as farmers, relying on their land for their livelihood. Seeking opportunity and stability, a relative living in Winnipeg sponsored their move so they could begin a new chapter in Canada.
After arriving, the children enrolled in school and began adapting to their new community. Their oldest daughter, Merhawit, has since graduated from high school and is now pursuing further education—a milestone that brings great pride to the entire family.
While Azeb manages the day‑to‑day needs of their busy household, Teklom works two jobs to support their growing family, which now includes their forth daughter, Hiyab. Their hard work and dedication reflect their deep commitment to providing safety, stability, and opportunity for their children.
The family currently lives in a subsidized rental home. While they are grateful to have a place to live, their dream of owning a home has remained strong. Teklom and Azeb hope to give their children more than just shelter—they want to provide a permanent place where their children can feel safe, rooted, and able to thrive in a supportive community.
Through Habitat for Humanity Manitoba, that dream is becoming a reality. With the support of Habitat, Teklom and Azeb are taking meaningful steps toward purchasing their first home and building a foundation of security and stability for their family’s future.
Their new Habitat home represents more than walls and a roof—it is the promise of a better life, a place where their children can grow, and a future filled with possibility.
