Hussen & Saada
Manal (4), Maya (2)
Hussen arrived from Ethiopia in 2001, Saada in 2006. They are both Canadian citizens. Hussen has a father and some siblings in Ethiopia, and also has five siblings whom he sponsored to come to Canada, who live in Alberta. Saada has a very good friend who owns a Habitat home.
The apartment is very neat and clean, with no repairs evidently needed. There is just one bedroom for the family of four; the closet space is very full.
Manal goes to nursery school two hours a day at Sister McNamara. Saada is a health care aide and works a regular night shift at Golden West Lodge. Hussen drives a taxi for dialysis patients and picks up other shifts as well. Hussen has driven taxi for many years and just last summer became involved in some of the office duties of the company. The parents share child care duties. Hussen proudly showed a home entertainment centre that he had built himself, using skills obtained when working at Palliser Furniture.
The family’s apartment is clearly too small for growing children. Hussen and Saada live in this apartment because it is cheap and they can use more money to make a good life for the children. They own without debt a 2006 Honda Civic which Saada drives to work, and Hussen uses the company taxi. The family previously applied for a Habitat home in 2014.
The family is extremely excited about owning their own home. Hussen has basic carpentry skills and is prepared to work on building the house. They have friends who are willing to help with the sweat equity.
