Meet Mitiku, Hawa & Family

Parents:
Mitiku & Hawa

Children:
Sons: Emanuel (2006) and Nathan (2018)
Daughter: Duraity (2012)

Mitiku and Hawa are originally from Ethiopia. Back home, Hawa worked as a baker and hairdresser, and Mitiku worked as a barber. They lived in a refugee camp in Kenya for 10 years before arriving to Canada. Their oldest children, Emanuel and Duraity were both born in Kenya. Nathan was born here in Canada.

Hawa is currently attending English classes at Mosaic Newcomer Resource Centre, while Nathan attends the daycare there while she is in class. The family only has one relative in Winnipeg, Mitiku’s brother, but they have made many friends in the Ethiopian community through their church.

The family currently resides in a small two-bedroom apartment in the south end of Winnipeg. Currently the children share a bedroom, which is not ideal and the family is running out of space. They look forward to having a place they can call home, where their children can have their own bedrooms.

Both parents currently work for the same cleaning company. They are excited to purchase their first home with the help of Habitat Manitoba. This family was accepted into the homeownership program with Habitat Manitoba in May 2022. They have done an amazing job working on their sweat equity hours – already more than halfway of the 500 hours required!

Their new home will be built at the Pandora Avenue West Development, which happens to be close to where they work.

Mitiku and Hawa look forward to providing the stability that homeownership brings, securing a successful future for their children.
