Volunteer Profile:
Bruce and Judy McDonald
Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg (HFHW) volunteers all share similar characteristics: a strong sense of community, hearts filled with compassion and enthusiasm for the Habitat for Humanity cause. Bruce and Judy McDonald are a volunteer couple who consistently display these traits. Bruce, a retired professor and Judy, a retired teacher are very active in the community and are dedicated to their family and faith.
Bruce and Judy began volunteering for HFHW 5 years ago when they read an article about HFHW in a local newspaper. “It really brought to light the need for affordable housing in Winnipeg,” said Judy. “We felt a desire to give back to the community and help these families.”
Keen participants in the pre-build, blitz-build, food services, 3rd party fundraising and church initiatives, the couple are very active supporters of HFHW. “It is the pleasure of working alongside devoted volunteers, professional HFHW staff, and deserving Winnipeg families that keep us coming back every year”, Bruce said. “I am amazed at the compassion and dedication of volunteers who selflessly take time out of their summer to be a part of the cause.”
Judy also feels that part of being a volunteer for HFHW includes educating the public on what the HFHW program is all about. “I feel it is important to create awareness within the community and explain that Habitat for Humanity is a hand up, not a hand out. I have had the privilege of working alongside and attending the home dedications of the families that purchase these homes, and know of the hardships and struggles they face. It is an honour to be a part of their journey,” Judy said.
Bruce and Judy will be back this summer! HFHW staff, volunteers and families all thank you for your dedication to our community!
