Hat’s Off

There are so many individuals, groups and companies that do so much for Habitat. Whether they contribute their time, make a donation, or hold an event to fundraising for us, we truly appreciate everyone’s contribution.  It is impossible to recognize everyone in our newsletters, instead we try to select a few to highlight and demonstrate what incredible acts of kindness are taking place in our community.  Thank you to everyone for your support!

120 day Habitat Journey Across Canada
On October 1, Jason Druker, a trainee solicitor from London, UK, began a 120 day journey across Canada to help Habitat for Humanity.  He will be making 11 stops across Canada and will spend approximately a week in each area volunteering to do whatever is needed.  We expect him to arrive in Winnipeg mid to late November and he will be helping us in the ReStore as well as on a build site.  He was recently inspired to help Habitat because he participated in a build in Romania.  His journey is raising awareness for Habitat for Humanity and the need for affordable housing, and he is raising money to help each affiliate he stops at.  To support Jason’s journey, please go to www.Canadahelps.org, select Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg and on the Donate page, you can designate your donation to go towards his journey.   We thank Jason for his advocacy and commitment to supporting Habitat.

Hitrac Rock’n Block Party
Two years ago, Case Construction Equipment, launched a North American wide partnership with Habitat for Humanity and they encourage their dealers to join them in supporting Habitat.  Hitrac, the local  Case dealer, invited Habitat to have a presence at their recent Rock’n Block Party open house.  Not only did Habitat have an opportunity to mingle with their customers, but Hitrac also

showed their commitment to affordable housing by presenting a cheque to Habitat for Humanity in the amount of $2,000.  This donation was made on behalf of Case Construction Equipment and Hitrac.

At the event, Habitat also had an opportunity to present a Rock Star Award to a Habitat supporter.  The award was presented to Darryl Stewart from Ibex Payroll for his involvement in the Clean Your Green initiative over the past few years. Clean Your Green  is focused on beautifying the greenspace near the Confusion Corner underpass and raise money for Habitat at the same time. Congratulations Darryl and Thank you Hitrac and Case!

A House for Habitat
Imagine our surprise when we received a phone call and were told that a family wanted to donate their family home to Habitat. After losing their parents, a family, who wishes to remain anonymous, wanted to make a difference in the community and chose to donate the family home to us, instead of selling it on the market.  It was a large home in a beautiful area that is being revitalized, but it was too large for the Habitat families we currently have in our program.  It was jointly decided that we would sell the home and use the proceeds towards building a new home in 2010. Thank you so much for your extreme generosity!

Ride Around the Lake

For four days from September 10 -13, 21 cyclists enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather for the 3rd annual Ride Around the Lake.  The route took the group from the Manitoba Border to Dog Tooth Lake Resort (approx 85km), on to Meline’s at Nestor Falls (approx. 90km), to Kenora’s Lakeside Inn (approx 128km) for a fabulous evening hosted by Qualico, the ride sponsor., and back to the Manitoba border (approx 60km).
Each rider raised a minimum of $5,000 and covered their ride expenses.  Thank you to all of the riders and the support volunteers – this year the ride raised over $120,000!

A Generous Five Year Old
Because Ethan Lagadi decided to support Habitat for Humanity for his fifth birthday party instead of receiving gifts, he gave a gift of hope to a Habitat homeowner.   His generous donation of $250 will fund two doors and a case of nails that will go into a 2009 home.

No More Payments!
Congratulations to two Habitat families for completing their final mortgage payments. David and Alice T. purchased their home in 1995 and made their final payment in September.  They are joined in this picture by some Habitat staff.

Thanks & Giving
The Winnipeg Metis Association Inc. coordinated a Thanks & Giving fundraising dinner on October 8th in support of the HFHW Metis Build.  It was a lovely evening at the Pine Ridge Golf Club that included great company, a delicious meal, and very lively dancing by the Norman Chief Memorial Dancers. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the event! If you are interested in supporting the Metis build, please designate your donation on our online form.

At the event, The RoyalBank presented Habitat for Humanity with a cheque for $20,000 to be directed to the Metis Build.  Thank you for your incredible support!

Casual Day
The Finance Department at MPI recently held casual days in Support of Habitat for Humanity.  The staff of about 50 to 60 raised $180.  Special thanks should go to Shirley and Bonnie for distributing stickers and collecting the money.  Thanks for dressing down for Habitat!
