Fundraising for Habitat

Churches

Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg (HFHW) is looking for churches and members of the Christian community to get involved with our 'Faith Build'. With your help, Habitat will enable Cheiwlu (Chei), his wife Grace and nine children to make their own way with the purchase of a new home through a no down payment, interest-free mortgage. In addition, like all Habitat families, these payments will be geared towards family income, not the value of the property. Chei and Grace will show their commitment to Habitat by contributing 500 hours of "sweat equity", working on their own home, other homes or in the ReStore.

As is the case of all Habitat partner families, their unfortunate personal circumstances and situation has put them in a position of need.

Read a condensed version of Chei and Grace's survival story through the power of faith.

The HFHW Faith Build goal is to fully fund and build a home for this devoted family. The total cost of a home is approximately $150,000.

Winnipeg Evangelical Free Church's congregation is undertaking fundraising to support this ambitious project. "Serving Christ by transforming lives and our community through Habitat is incredibly rewarding. We have contributed financial support and volunteers in the past and want to do what we can to help again this year. Partnering with Habitat allows us to carry out God's will in a very tangible and meaningful way. We encourage every Christian community and all Christians to join with us in building a home for Chei and Grace."
-John Ruban, Winnipeg Evangelical Free Church

How can Churches help?

  1. Invite a Habitat representative to speak at your church to increase awareness.
  2. Support the Faith Build financially. Whether you choose to pass the hardhat, or undertake other fundraisers on our behalf, our goal is to raise $150,000 by the end of year in order to fully fund the home. Various levels of sponsorship recognition exist.
  3. Gather members of your congregation to volunteer on a build site or in the Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg ReStore.
  4. Provide meals and snacks for Habitat volunteers during a build project.
  5. Involve your youth group
  6. Add Habitat for Humanity children's books to your library to read and discuss with your K-6 groups.
  7. Study groups can read and discuss "The Theology of the Hammer" by Millard Fuller (call 1-800-667-5137 to purchase a copy). This publication outlines Habitat's biblical principles.

Join us in our Day of Prayer, observed each year on the third Sunday of September, when Habitat supporters around the world are urged to pray for those in need of safe, decent and affordable shelter and for those whom God is calling to respond. For more information click here.

By involving your church, you are putting your faith and love into action in a meaningful and powerful way. Each Habitat home that your church builds or helps buil, serves as a lasting reminder of God's grace. It is difficult to ignore such a tangible expression of love. The community notices when people work together as an instrument of God's love. Within and among congregations, people experience a strong sense of unity and purpose when together, they reach out to neighbours in need.

Fundraising Ideas:
  • Plan a fun Habitat for Humanity fundraising event such as a pancake breakfast, bingo bowl, or a family sleigh ride.
  • Your congregation can join us for a build day and help us financially by accepting our Adopt-a-Day Challenge.
  • Build a Habitat paper home
Encourage your congregation to build a home or community out of paper components.  Individual home kits are available and can be assembled on a wall in a common area.  Once assembled, each home measures 192cm high by 126cm wide (75.5 inches by 49.5 inches).  The goal of this fundraiser is to raise a minimum of $518.00 which equates to the cost of lighting fixtures in a real Habitat for Humanity Home. Each home kit is made up of 1 foundation, two supporting walls, 109 bricks, two windows, one door, a ceiling, two roof halves, and a chimney.  Whoever purchases the component writes their name on the item and tapes it onto the wall. The suggested value of the components are as follows:

    • Foundation $50
    • Supporting walls $20 each
    • Bricks $2 each
    • Windows $20 each
    • Door $20
    • Ceiling $35
    • Half Roof $50 each
    • Chimney $15

The kits include structural elements that are made of coroplast (corrugated plastic).  These components will be on loan for the duration of the fundraiser and will need to be returned to Habitat for Humanity.

Consider building a home, or a community. Just let us know how many kits you would like.

  • Have your congregation make donations to cover the costs of certain items in a home:
  • - sheet of drywall, $15
    - case of nails, $50
    - a single door, $100
    - light fixtures, $500
    - high efficiency water tank, $500
    - high efficiency furnace, $2,500
    - electrical material, $5,000
    - roof, $6,500

An alternative approach would be to collect donations of $125 which equates to the costs for a square foot in a Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg home.

If you are interested in holding a Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg Fundraiser, please register your event and someone from Habitat will contact you.
